Oyeladun - Life in the Americas
When there is no work here I am allotted to other plantations to help in their houses. There are other slaves there who speak my language and tell me what is happening there. People are beaten and murdered and raped everywhere. I am almost thankful it is not me but remind myself that I am a slave. I will watch for my chance to escape.

Alotted
Slaves who were 'allotted' were loaned out to other houses and plantations.
Murdered
Slaves were property and had no rights. A white person who beat, killed, raped or tortured a slave was not considered a criminal even if there were witnesses to the act. In many cases it was thought a good way to warn other slaves against uprising.
