A house where the slaves slept. They were very basic, often let in the wind and rain and were infested with rats, insects etc.
White people in areas with lots of slaves feared uprisings. In many cases they were out-numbered by slaves and as more people were enslaved so fear grew. As a result uprisings on plantations were punished with extreme violence. In the 18th and 19th centuries there was a major slave rebellion in the American colonies every twenty years or so.
